Class Experience
Live performance is critical to a young singer's education. In this class students will sing, get coached by a professional, and learn to give and receive helpful feedback from peers. These skills will help children grow as confident and resilient musicians. Teaching strategies will include teacher modeling, student imitation, group singing, individual performances, peer to peer feedback, note taking, and classroom discussion. Students will be able to: -learn the basics of great singing -safely strengthen their vocal cords with at-home exercises -practice comfortable stage presence with specific body language skills -understand 3 resilience strategies to cope with stage fright -perform in front of their peers -properly hold and sing into a microphone -give and receive helpful peer-feedback
Whitney Permann has been a professional singer, song writer, recording artist, and performer in the popular recording trio, Mercy River, for over 13 years (mercyrivermusic.com). While at BYU-Idaho, she was a cast member of Showtime Company and also founded the musical group "From the Heart," which continues to be a popular ensemble to this day. At BYU in Provo she toured with the elite Concert Choir and also served as a director for the acclaimed Jenny Phillips Fireside Group. Mercy River, which has been a popular staple at events such as Time Out for Women and Women’s Conference, and has performed all over the nation and internationally, including England, Australia, Wales, Scotland, and New Zealand. Together, they have recorded and released 6 studio albums with Shadow Mountain Records. She currently owns and directs a children's performance group out of her home. She has a degree in Secondary Education from BYU, has taught private music lessons, and has been an online teacher for 2 years.
No homework is required, although I will encourage students will use the feedback and techniques from class to continue rehearsing their songs.
Please come prepared to share a 90 second selection from any song (usually a verse and a chorus). You can sing a cappella or with a track. Students will be asked to stand while they sing so I can monitor their stage presence and body movement. Please set your device up in a space with good lighting. A microphone may be used but is not required. We will be taking notes, so grab a notebook and a pen before class.
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
Learners will be assessed by their peers (as carefully guided by the teacher) as well as their instructor. The student will receive verbal and written feedback from the teacher.
55 minutes per week in class, and an estimated 0 - 1 hours per week outside of class.
