This is an introduction to simplifying fractions. The lesson will be introduced as what simplifying fractions represents and how the value of a fraction does not change even dough the numbers were changed to smaller ones. Students will also see some models represented with the fractions from both the original and the simplified one to help understand what it means to simplify a fraction in real life. Learners will also get to see that in some cases simplifying is not an option when the numbers do not align to the rules of simplifying fractions. Students might be asked to annotate on the screen, if students are not able to I can show them how to do it. (shading on models) Students will take notes on how to simplify fractions step by step. When students feel comfortable with the topic I will ask them to work on independent practice and have them send me the answers to the problems. I will be asking questions randomly to check for understanding. At the end of class again I will ask students about the steps necessary to simplify fractions to make sure students have master this lesson.

The goal of this lesson is to help students understand what simplifying fractions is all about and how to picture it using models.

Simplifying Fractions is a lesson I have taught both in a public school with a class of 20-30 students and in private tutoring setting, and I have always been able to identify the misconceptions regarding this lesson. I understand how students respond to it and it allows me to adjust my teaching style to individual needs.
