Class Experience

US Grade 8 - 11
Beginner - Intermediate Level
Short Version: Classwork and homework are featured general explanations of everyday math that adults use. This class meets twice a week for four weeks. This can be used as a math refresher course up to a point. Students will be called on in the classroom. Read the long version for the details that will definitely matter by the end of the first week, aka Day Two.

Long Version

Banking, loans, financing, interest, and co-signers will be some hot topics. Wages, budgeting, and planning will be explained. Students will discover the details of moving out, rent, and roommates. Finding out what their minimum income should be, the many associated costs of driving, and why parents may have denied them things will also be featured. Since this is personal or consumer finance, credit and shopping will be discussed. They'll learn how to realistically afford a car--and whether it should be new or used.

Even for the college-bound, money management will matter. This course will relate how holes in math knowledge can interfere with the everyday things they'll be doing as college students, adults, and employees whether at home or on the job. Math-based careers will also be discussed. In this class, they will learn how it all really goes.

Students will need some basic math skills, a calculator, and anything they use to take notes.

Learning Goals

Students will learn how the homes they live in and the vehicles they ride in (or drive) figure into their adult responsibilities. They will learn what it takes to function the way they do and what they didn't realize about that.

Parents have lots of experience with this, but a close relationship can make it hard for a kid to believe them. Much of the same knowledge coming from another person can help young adults be objective. I provide an icebreaker supported by many years of teaching and tutoring math--and real-life budgeting.
