Class Experience
"On the first day of Thanksgiving, this is what I ate..." Let's create a silly song about our favorite Thanksgiving foods! Each class will compose a unique song that your student helped to create! To begin class, we will learn the melody and basic structure of the "Twelve Days of Christmas" song. Students will discuss the definition of melody and lyrics, and identify how the lyrics of this song can be changed to be about a Thanksgiving feast. Learning goals for this class include the following: Students will learn the music vocabulary words "composer, "melody," and "lyrics." Students will practice keeping a steady beat. Students will learn to sing a new song. Students will work together to come up with new, silly lyrics.
I have spent the past 9 years as an elementary music teacher. I hold a Bachelor's of Music Education degree with a specialization in elementary classroom music, and am currently certified to teach music to students in grades PK-12. My experience in teaching in the classroom and online with various learners has helped me to design classes that get students excited about music. I have a passion for helping learners understand music by exploring fun new ways to experience it!
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
I will informally assess each student's ability to sing and keep a steady beat by watching and listening as we sing together. I will check for student understanding of the difference between "melody" and "lyrics."
30 minutes per week in class, and maybe some time outside of class.
