US Grade Kindergarten - 1
In this one-time class, we will practice beginning reading and writing skills in order to read and write a complete sentence together. Here's the twist: the sentences we create will have a silly mix of subjects, verbs, and adjectives (making our sentence, well, silly)! This specific "Silly Sentences"class is specially created for Christmas, with Christmas-themed silly stories, words, and sentences! **I also offer a regular version of this class throughout the year! At the beginning of this class, we will learn about nouns, verbs, and adjectives. We'll practice what these words mean through song and dance (for whoever wants to join me in singing and showing off their dance moves)! We will learn and practice sentence structure (starts with a capital, ends with punctuation, spaces between words), discuss spelling strategies as they arise in our sentences, and work to form a complete sentence together. This class is very much student-led as we create our sentence(s) together, which gives me the opportunity to be flexible as a teacher and teach different writing and spelling strategies as we encounter them. Because of this, the great thing about this "one-time" class is that, since each class will be different in content based on the students in the class, and based on which reading/writing strategy I am teaching that day, this class can be taken over and over again! The silly stories we create will be different each time, and the sentences we read and write together will vary as well. Join me as we work on our beginning reading writing skills, create sentences together, and, just maybe, get a little silly! ***When writing, I will guide students through sounding out each word and spelling phonetically [writing the letter(s) for each sound heard in the word]. I will teach spelling patterns and strategies as I see fit, but not all words may be spelled correctly in this class as we write together. We are aiming for creating independent writers, so while I may teach the correct spelling of a word, I will first guide your student through sounding the word out on their own. That way, when your learner wants to write a word independently and does not know that word’s spelling, they can use phonetic spelling [identifying each sound in a word and applying the correct letter(s) that match that sound] to write it. As long as it includes every sound, and we can read it, they will have successfully written independently. We are encouraging confident and independent writers! (An example of this would be if your learner wrote "casl" for "castle" or "bune" for "bunny.") *Students in this class should know all letters and sounds and be able to write each letter independently. (However, I am always happy to help briefly review handwriting of a letter while we write if a student asks!) Prior knowledge of/exposure to sight words is recommended, but not required, for this class (I will briefly reteach as we encounter each one). ***The Christmas stories and sentences included in this class may include these topics/words: "Santa, hat, elf, candy cane, stocking, tree, snow, presents/gifts, singing, cookies, lights, decorations" and other general Christmas words. Word choices will be given to students in this class so that the stories/sentences we read and write stay unbiased as we celebrate, have fun, and learn together!
Learning Goals
Students will learn about nouns, verbs, and adjectives and practice reading and writing a complete sentence.

Parental Guidance
Please make sure that your child knows how to mute/unmute during our class, or try to remain close by in case they need help with this. I don't like to mute students since my classes are very interactive! However, sometimes background noise or computer/internet issues can cause interruptions in students hearing me speak. I will mute only when needed to make sure that all students can benefit from the learning in the class and each have a chance to speak and be heard. Thank you for your support in this!
