This club is a beginner course for students interested in learning American Sign Language (ASL). Students will gain the knowledge that ASL is a language which uses hand movements and positions, fingerspelling, and facial expressions. During the 4 weeks, we will engage in learning the ASL alphabet, fingerspelling our names, signs for numbers, colors, and family. As we acquire more signs/vocabulary, we will begin to sign complete sentences and communicate with each other in class. An exciting part of class is when conversations start to appear! Practice is important. After each class, students will receive papers to help reinforce what they just learned. Some weeks, papers will be emailed in advance to be printed out for the next class. Games, discussions, pictures, props and coloring will be part of the club and add to our exciting journey of learning a new language! Week 1: Alphabet, Fingerspelling Names, and Numbers Week 2: Alphabet, Numbers, and Bingo Week 3: Colors Week 4: Family

Teacher expertise and credentials
I studied sign language for two years in high school and one year in college. During high school, I had wonderful opportunities to visit schools for the Deaf. I have incorporated sign language in my public school classrooms and have taught sign language in many after-school programs. I love how sign language enhances children's communication, language, and spatial skills.
