Class Experience

US Grade Kindergarten - 1
Beginner - Intermediate Level
*I will always teach below the minimum number of learners at the beginning of a semester! After a few weeks, if there are still not enough enrollments, I will give at least one or two weeks' notice to anyone enrolled before ending the class or trying a different time slot. :)

Join me for a beginning reading and writing class with sight word practice! In this ongoing class, students will learn four new sight words each week and use that knowledge to both read sentences and write a complete sentence with those sight words. In each class, we will start by learning and practicing each sight word through reading, writing, repetition, and movement. We will use our mastery of these new words to read and write sentences together as a class! Not all words included in our sentences will be these sight words. Learners will use knowledge of letters and sounds to produce other words included in our sentences. Students will be reminded of and guided through sounding out each word, one sound and letter(s) at a time, when writing. Digraphs, blends, vowel teams, and other spelling strategies will be taught and reviewed as they are encountered each week. Although each week will have specific sight words and "tricky sounds" taught, I am a flexible teacher and love to add in other tips and tricks as we encounter them together! I love having fun with my students and letting my class be student-led at times.

***Please note that not all words may be spelled correctly in our sentences when writing. Other than the sight words that we learn, any words we sound out to write together will be spelled phonetically. We will practice segmentation: hearing, identifying, and separating each phoneme in a word as we write. An example of this would be if I said the word “dog.” To segment, or separate, this word, the student should be able to hear and identify each phoneme (individual sound) in the word, “/d/-/o/-/g/.” Knowledge of letters and letter sounds will help learners connect those sounds they hear to the physical letter(s) written on paper. Through this, children are able to put their spoken words into writing! Our goal in this class is for students to practice spelling phonetically, writing a letter(s) for each sound heard in the word they are writing. This is an important stage of spelling and a stepping stone to successful spelling and writing. While I may model the correct spelling for students, I will always first walk through the word phonetically with them. An example of this would be if your learner writes “casl” for the word “castle.” All sounds are present, and your learner is gaining confidence in using their own knowledge to spell and write independently!

Finally, students will learn and practice correct sentence structure (capital letter at the beginning, spaces between words, punctuation) in order to write a complete sentence! Students in this class should have prior knowledge and confidence in identifying letters and sounds and be able to write each letter, both uppercase and lowercase. This class will take learners from hearing/saying the word to reading it, writing it, and, furthermore, forming complete sentences. Bring your letter knowledge, and become writing experts with me!

Parental Guidance
Since this is a class for young learners, I just ask that a parent or guardian be around during the lesson videos to help if/when needed (example: if your learner needs help with a technical issue in order to see/hear and be seen/heard). Thank you for your support!
Supply List
For the full experience, students should have something readily available to write with (ex: paper and pencil/pen/crayon, whiteboard and dry-erase marker, magic doodle board, etc.) to participate in the handwriting portion of the class. I will include a few print-out options for your learner to use in this sentence-writing class if you choose to use them. I strongly recommend having some sort of writing tools for this class, since it is a writing class and we will be writing together throughout the class. However, I always welcome all learners into my classroom!
