Are you frustrated trying to help your child memorize high frequency words? Did you know that memorizing words takes 5-500 repetitions (depending on the child)? There has got to be a better way, right? There is and it is backed by the science of reading. Using this method, our brains will store these words with just 1-4 repetitions in a process called orthographic mapping. In this ongoing class, we will map out 3 irregular high-frequency words each week. All of these high frequency words are tricky because of the irregular spellings. Children should be familiar with letters and sounds before enrolling in this course. Course Structure: -Introductions -Say/listen to the word -Map out the word together -Write it/read it -Review the words we have learned -Say goodbye Week of May 17th (as, out, would) Week of May 24th (each, what, were) Things to know: -Sight words are not "words that can't be sounded out so you just have to know them by sight". -Sight words are called sight words because you DO know them by sight. -Adults know 30k-70k sight words. -High frequency words are words that show up most often in text. -All words can be decoded.
