The spelling of words such as <laugh> can be confusing at first. This class will explain how to examine words with a <ugh> in them, such as laugh, rough, & though for both reading and spelling. Each word will have a story about its origin. The building blocks of these words will be explained and manipulatives will be used to reinforce this concept. The teacher will use story, tactile block demonstration, choral spelling recitation (according to graphemes), and check for student understanding. Students will follow along with provided paper tiles so that they can understand the basics of our English spelling, as well as looking at how to read these words. Students will use visual, auditory and tactile senses during this exploration. After this class, your student will have a different understanding when encountering words with a <ugh> inside.
Learning Goals
* Learn what a grapheme is
* Know the difference between a grapheme and a marker

Teacher expertise and credentials
Students often struggle with high-frequency words, but when they learn about these from their story they seem to grasp them at a much higher rate. I teach about the <ugh> often individually and I love to see the kids really understand why these words are spelled this way. I have been studying graphemes (and markers) through Structured Word Inquiry for several years. Teaching "sight words" in this way is something that seems to make sense to kids.
