Memorization is so much fun when you know how to do it right! It also is a great confidence booster for kids when they can walk away after only thirty minutes and have a poem memorized. Almost every student I have worked with is excited to show off their new skill. My style is energetic and lively so students engaged and active throughout the entire class. For this class we will use the poems from "Linguistic Development Through Poetry Memorization: A Mastery Learning Approach." Families do NOT need the book. Week of June 3 - two short poems: Ooey Gooey author unknown and Celery by Ogden Nash Week of June 10 - two short poems: The Little Man Who Wasn't There by Hughes Mearns and The Vulture by Hilaire Belloc Week of June 17 - one longer poem: After the Party by William Wise Week of June 24 -one longer poem: Singing Time by Rose Fyleman Week of July 1 - one longer poem: The Yak by Hilaire Belloc Sample poems: Oooey Gooey Oooey gooey was a worm, A might worm was he. He stepped upon the railroad tracks, The train he did not see! Oooooey Goooey! Celery by Ogden Nash Celery, raw Develops the jaw, But celery, stewed, Is more quietly chewed. I will provide tips and tricks to help memorize the poems as well as give ways they can review the poem throughout the week. Classes will be lively and engaging. We will move at the pace of the students ability to memorize. Each child will have opportunities during class to recite the poem. Assistance will be provided as needed. We will practice one line or phrase at a time slowly adding another line or phrase. Visual cues and hand motions will be included to help with memorization. Parents, students, and I will communicate together to decide if other pieces of literature will be used in this class.

Teacher expertise and credentials
Michigan Teaching Certificate in Elementary Education
Hi! I'm teacher Veronica. I've been teaching for over 20 years. I’ve taught in both brick-and-mortar classrooms as well as online. I’ve been homeschooling my children since they were in kindergarten. I LOVE to memorize. I started memorizing large passages in 2010 and it's become an addiction with me. I'm offering classes that teach students how to memorize using classic poems. Not only does your child walk away with a poem memorized but more importantly he/she is learning a life-long skill of how to memorize and retain the passage. I'm also enjoying creating classes on problem solving. In these classes, students enjoy solving a mystery, but more importantly I'm teaching them how to think critically and ask questions. I'm laying a foundation of what problem solving looks like and how it can be used in our every day lives. My husband and I lived in Alaska for 18 years with our three children. We now reside in Michigan with our kids, one cat and one dog. One of my favorite things to do is walk around our neighborhood with my husband and enjoy the beauty. In Alaska we even walked when it was -30 degrees.
