***Please note Frankie the dog will not be appearing in this class from 10th March until 14th April as I will be overseas, but I would still love to see your pets*** Firstly, students will get the opportunity to meet my dog, Frankie, I will start off the class by modelling a show and tell with Frankie (no promises he will be awake!) Students will practice public speaking by sharing their pets with the other learners. They will be encouraged to talk about what type of animal the pet is, why it is special, how long they have had this pet and other things relating to their pet. If the pet is able to do any tricks, children will be able to show this too. I will help out children who are shy by asking questions but it is beneficial for everyone if the child is able to talk about their pet and explain why it is special, rather than just holding it up to the camera and having me ask all the questions. The children will be reminded to use a loud clear voice so the other learners can hear. This is a great opportunity for children to grow in confidence with speaking aloud, it’s also a useful class for children who are still learning English as this gives them a chance to practice their speaking skills. Once a child has finished sharing their pet, the rest of the class may take turns in asking questions to that child or saying a positive comment about the other child's show and tell. This also helps children practice listening skills. Since this class involves sharing a pet it is a good idea for a parent to be on hand to help with the handling of the animal, however, parents must ensure they remain off camera as per Outschool's policy. The amount of children in the class will depend on the length of time your child is able to speak for. All children will be given an equal length of time to speak. If the class is full we will likely go over time, if you need to attend another lesson just let me know and your child can go first. Unfortunately this class will not run with only 1 student, 2 students is the minimum. If there is only 1 student enrolled you will be provided with the option of transferring to another day/time or a full refund.
Learning Goals
Students will learn to speak in a loud clear voice. They will discuss a pet and answer questions about this. Children will gain confidence in public speaking.
Other Details
Parental Guidance
Please make sure your child can discuss their pet they have brought rather than just holding it to the camera and having me ask all the questions. The first question I will ask your child is 'tell me about what you brought for show and tell.' Your child should be able to confidently share a few facts about their pet. For example, this is my dog called Sam, he is brown, he is special to me because I got him for my birthday, he is soft and cuddly. I will then follow up with questions to expand on their answers before asking other students to ask questions/make comments.
Supply List
A pet that children can bring to the camera and talk about.
External Resources
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
Teacher expertise and credentials
I am a qualified teacher of nearly 6 years, with a specialism in teaching Early Years (3-7 year olds), I also have a Masters in Education. Prior to becoming a teacher I was a paediatric nurse for 4 years. I gained my qualifications in England and taught in a primary school for 2 years, before emigrating to Australia in 2017. I now work as a classroom teacher in Australian primary schools. My teaching qualification entitles me to teach up to the age of 18 and I have experience of teaching many high school children through my own successful tutoring business outside of Outschool. As a result of my specialist tutoring all of these children's grades have increased. I love tutoring and it would be my dream to do this full time. Many of my tutoring students come to me for specialist writing support as I am an examination marker for NAPLAN, which is an Australian exam.
I want to make learning fun and exciting for children, my aim is to provide them with enjoyment when learning a new concept. I am a patient teacher and enthusiastic in my approach, yet I also have an excellent knowledge of how to get good results.
The type of classes I enjoy teaching are craft classes for younger primary school children, writing and maths classes for primary and high school students, but my particular passion is individual tutoring, as I love seeing the progress children make.
