Shoujo Anime and Feminist Studies
Class experience
US Grade 5 - 8
Shoujo anime, typically targeted at young girls due to their plots of school drama and romance, has developed greatly over the years as a source of solid feminist media. In this class, young learners will to use this form of television and film as a way of exploring feminist topics. Through video clips, lecture, discussion, and vocabulary, students will understand how the genre has developed to promote more empowering narratives through some key series. Week 1, Shoujo Origins and The...
As a scholar of queer issues, I have experience teaching themes regarding LGBTQIA+ topics and other sensitive content regarding sexuality for the preteen age group. I try to present material in a less sensationalized way so that it is easy to digest. I also will provide alternative assignments for queer-themed lessons if a family prefers that their child does not participate in that week's lesson.
Homework Offered
After our final class, students will be assigned a minimum three-pages, double spaced final paper that will be due one week after the class finishes where they will choose one of the themes, vocabulary terms, or shows discussed in class and expand on it in a more in-depth way.1 - 2 hours per week outside of class
Assessments Offered
Rather than a letter grade, students will be given individual written feedback and a formal write-up on their final paper, as well as an informal report on their work in the class at the close of the course.Grades Offered
Week 5: Ouran High School Host Club has some suggestive media present regarding language and crude humor. The Common Sense Media ranking is 14+, but this is an anime that I have done a lot of academic work with young learners (9 and up) on in the past with no parental complaints. We will not be watching any clips that have explicit language and will instead focus on the importance of Haruhi as a tomboy heroine in a genre dictated by femininity. Week 8: Both Bloom into You and Asago to Kase-San have lesbian themes, and we will be talking about queer theory this week. The most explicit thing that is shown in either series is a kiss between two girls. I will not be showing either of those clips. We will instead discuss the double standard that queer couples often face in anime, wherein a kiss between a boy and girl is viewed as normal but a kiss between two girls or two boys is seen as taboo.
