During this course, students will master the short vowel sounds, a, e, i, o, and u. Each day will focus on a new short vowel sound. 1. Class will begin with hellos and optional sharing of something good! 2. We will then review the consonant sounds. The teacher will introduce the day’s target vowel sound. 3. Students will then participate in phonological awareness activities, which are listening activities that help students understand and hear the phonemes in a word. Children who are successful at phonemic awareness activities have shown higher reading scores in elementary school (National Reading Panel, 2000). 4. Next, students will manipulate letter tiles (printed and cut before class, see classroom handout) to create words with the target sound. 5. Then, students will practice sounding out and reading words with the target vowel. 6. Following word reading, students will write words with a focus on correct letter formation. 7. Class will conclude with a change the word game. Materials will be provided as homework to help support independent practice of the target sound. Before enrolling in this course, students should know the 22 consonant sounds. Day 1 - a Day 2 - i Day 3 - o Day 4 - u Day 5 - e Learners of all abilities and backgrounds are welcome.
