Short Story Writing 201 Workshop: Develop Your 101 Story
What's included
4 live meetings
3 hrs 40 mins in-class hoursClass Experience
Learners will continue to use the "tool kit" from Short Story Writing 101. This information includes explanations of elements necessary to create short stories. We will build on this material by learning how to develop characters through direct or indirect characterization. For direct characterization, writers explicitly tell the reader about the character with remarks like Gina loved to dance. When using indirect characterization, the writer shows Gina dancing. We will look at the importance of choosing themes and how to pick interesting ones. In addition, classmates will support each other's ideas by providing feedback on their stories which will be read in class. Ideas for plot development will be discussed and crafted, as well as discussions about emerging conflicts and themes, and how to best develop them. I am a coach who guides classroom learners; the students create their stories.
Learning Goals
Students will learn the diagram which defines and explains plots. It includes the rising action, the climax, and the falling action and conclusion (resolution of conflict). Learners will use the "tool kit" of parts necessary for a short story's composition, and they will develop each element of a story, such as the conflict.
The goal is that each learner will be able to refer to his or her "kit" each time a story is begun.
The final result for Short Story Writing 201 is a completed story and the methodology of story writing which allows learners to continue as writers.

Teacher expertise and credentials
Hi,
My name is Roberta Stein and I have been an English classroom teacher for over twenty years. I have a Bachelor's and a Master's degree in English; I completed the equivalent of a minor in creative writing during college. In addition, I completed a teacher training program in the late 1990s for grades 6-12. I hold a teaching certificate from the state of New Jersey; I currently live in Florida.
I have taught English at all levels, including middle school, high school, and college-level courses. One of my favorite experiences as a teacher was when I taught ancient literature from India to a very large classroom in a magnet high school. I am extremely animated when I teach because I have a passion for sharing knowledge with students and their families. I am open-minded and I love to learn from my students' comments and their written reactions to the content.
Personal tidbits about me: I enjoy painting with bright colors, singing, riding my bike, going on the canoe with my husband, travel, and entertaining ( with food and laughter).
