Pack your virtual bags, because we're going on a "Short Story World Tour"! This class includes teacher presentation and learner participation. Throughout the class meeting, learners are invited to offer their opinions, ask questions, and share what they know about the week's featured country and culture. Before each class meeting, learners are provided with a short story to read from a different location in the world. (All stories are in the public domain and are free to access.) I begin the class with images from the country central to the setting of the short story and an overview of the aspects of that country and its culture as relevant to understanding that week's short story. During this presentation, I encourage learners to respond to the images they see and share their impressions with the group. After the initial presentation of the featured country and its culture, we begin our discussion of the short story of the week with a plot overview. Following this plot review, I use guiding questions to initiate a discussion of the short story for the week. Some of the elements these guiding questions address include: characterization, setting, internal and external conflict, motivation, suspense, imagery, and narration. Learners are encouraged to participate in the discussion and to offer their interpretations of the literature. The schedule for Weeks 1-6 follows: Week 1 : Short Story from Argentina Week 2 : Short Story from China Week 3 : Short Story from Nigeria Week 4 : Short Story from France Week 5 : Short Story from US Week 6 : Short Story from New Zealand I look forward to exploring the world of short stories together on our "Short Story World Tour"! *Please feel free to contact me if the cost of this class (or any of my classes) is a prohibitive factor to enrolling.

Welcome to my classroom!
For 30 years I've helped students appreciate literature, develop their rhetorical and creative writing skills, and better organize and complete tasks. A central goal of my teaching & coaching is empowering students with strategies they can make use of on their own, and in each class I encourage students to participate fully in our sessions together by contributing to class discussions and asking questions.
I have a Bachelor's Degree in English Education, a Master's Degree in Literature, and a Doctorate in Curriculum and Instruction. My current class offerings include literature studies, book clubs, creative writing and formal essay writing classes, and Executive Function coaching.
When I'm not teaching, I love spending time with my family and traveling! :)
