Class Experience

Students will improve their understanding of the crime genre, irony, and plot twists. Students will consider how the author wants the reader to feel about the main character. They will analyze the story to see how Dahl can make the reader care about a character that commits murder.

The class will discuss: Who was the murderer? Are they guilty, or could they plea temporary insanity? What was their motive? Does the suspect have an alibi? Did the killer use the perfect weapon?
The teacher will also highlight literary techniques employed by the author during the interactive reading of the text.

I am certified to teach ELA in the state of New Jersey to grades K-12. I have taught middle school english for over ten years. I have additional certifications to teach both middle and high school english. I have taught this story for many years, and my students always enjoy this lesson.
The teacher will provide a worksheet with extension activities. These are optional, but can extend learning beyond the classroom.
I will give an electronic handout with links to other resources.
The teacher will check for understanding throughout the reading.
1 hour per week in class, and maybe some time outside of class.
The main character in this story commits murder. She is pregnant and her husband plans to leave her. This content is mature, but is not graphic. This story is often taught in both a middle school and high school setting. You know your learner best so please sign them up if you feel that they can handle this material.
