Class Experience

US Grade 8 - 11
This is a fun and engaging ongoing class, students coming together to discuss a text, either a short story, short film, or poem, with each other under the facilitation of a veteran teacher who is an expert at providing students a safe and secure learning environment. That said, there are two purposes for the class, equal in their intention:

  - One purpose is to provide the learners a chance to build their communication skills. Students will be encouraged to talk, listen, and otherwise gain positive experience in sharing and listening to each other's opinions.
  - The second purpose is to have the students develop their critical thinking skills.

As an ongoing class, each week works as a stand-alone activity, meaning students can join the activity at any time. In fact, having students come and go will contribute to social growth opportunities.

While the conversation in this class is English, the class is ESL friendly, appropriate for CEFR: A2, B1, B2, and beyond. Having learners from different countries and backgrounds helps expand our opportunities to connect with and respect each other.

Washington Teaching Certificate in Elementary Education
Master's Degree from Pacific Oaks College
I've been a certified teacher for over 30 years, including being the founder of a progressive middle & high school in Seattle (in 1994). I have a warm way of engaging with students who typically come away feeling cared for after attending one of my classes. I love helping students build social-emotional skills, and I love discussing engaging texts with people. In this class, I get to do both!
