Class Experience

Welcome to the world of SHOELACES!

Tying and lacing shoes can be tough… and there are many reasons for this! Sometimes, our fingers aren’t able to manipulate shoelaces, and some basic fine motor strengthening activities can make a big difference. Other times, it’s just hard for kids to see where exactly to put each shoelace. Many time, our kids aren’t given the opportunity to tie, as parents sometimes settle for Velcro shoes since it’s “easier” for the time being.

Whatever the reason - let’s address it!

This course is meant for kids of all ages. While I was unable to set a vast age range, all students are invited to take this course. As a teacher (and a mom) I know that kids develop at different paces, and some kids learn to tie by the time they enter school, and other still struggle with the confidence of tying well into their teenage years. And guess what - THAT IS OK!!

This flexible course will allow your child to learn on their own time, while keeping their identity private. No live classes. No risking other friends knowing that you may not know how to tie your shoes just yet. No need to feel embarrassed about not being able to tie! We are all here with one goal in mind - despite our ages.

Each week, I will post a video with that week’s new skill. Videos will be posted as follows:

Week One: The “bunny ears” method
Week Two: The “loop, swoop, and pull” method
Week Three: Tightening and double knotting
Week Four: Lacing shoes

Throughout each week, I will also post visual step-by-step directions for those kiddos that may learn better with pictures rather than a video. I will also post resources to help address any underlying reasons that may be causing your child to struggle with tying (i.e.: bilateral coordination, fine motor skills, etc.) With all of these resources, you (as your child’s parent/guardian) can help your child with any struggles. I will also be available to answer any questions!

Minimal engagement in the classroom is required by learners, however, in order for a child to be successful with this course, they (and you) must commit to using the material as guidance.

**Remember families! All children develop at their own pace. Even if we think our children are ready to tie their shoes, they may not be developmentally ready just yet. Do not get discouraged if your child has a tough time! Even though popcorn is prepared in the same pot, with the same oil, and the same cooking conditions, they all pop at different times! Your child's turn to pop will come! :)
Let’s work together to help your child feel confident with their shoelaces!

Here are some tips to know if your child is ready to tie their shoes:
- They can manipulate things with their fingers… like buttons, zippers, or lacing beads.
- They are using scissors to cut paper.
- They can draw stick figures and simple pictures with a writing utensil.
- They are using a fork and spoon to eat with.

Hello! I am Miss Leslie! Thank you for considering me to teach your child in Outschool. My goal is to foster a love of learning from all students, whether I teach them one time, or one hundred times!

Experience I Bring:
⭐️Bachelors in Early Childhood Education
⭐️Masters in Reading Education
⭐️12+ years teaching kindergarten
⭐️ 1.5 years of teaching elementary and junior high physical education
⭐️1 year of reading intervention
⭐️1.5 years working with 0-3 year olds
⭐️ Over 14 years working with students with special needs
⭐️Tutoring K-6th grade
⭐️2 years online ESL teacher
⭐️1.5 years online kindergarten

I believe that all children are capable of learning. I also know that these young years in a child's life are full of growth, and I would like to touch the lives of as many children as possible during that crucial time in brain development. I teach though silly voices, song, and love to interact with my students. It takes a LOT to keep young kids engaged during online teaching, and I would love to use my gift to teach your child!

I currently exclusively teach a beginner ASL class. I still continue to teach in a public elementary school during the daytime, so I am unable to accomodate additional daytime classes at this time. In the summer, my offerings vary.

I have two young children of my own, and love to spend my spare time making as many memories as possible. Our family is very involved in church and sports. We love the outdoors, but also love a relaxing evening in.

Please let me know what I can do to help your child.
