Description

Class Experience

The goal of the class is to complete a short story within six weeks. Students will learn about Gothic Horror, story structuring, and the world of Jackson. Writers will often use their own experiences as the foundation for their stories - We will look into the events in the life of Jackson that influenced her material.
I have been working with young adults for over 10+ years and have several methods when discussing sensitive topics with them. I teach several horror-related classes that have been very successful when it comes to covering dark topics and being entertaining. One of the joys of being a horror writer is the ability to turn something terrifying into something amusing and enjoyable. Jackson has made several 'appearances' in one of my horror creative writing clubs and has sparked much interest in the minds of several teens. This is why I felt it was time to give them her a class. I have been an avid reader of Shirley Jackson for 15 years now and have used her writing style as the foundation for many of my own stories. Her use of symbolism and nightmarish settings, have made her a fascinating writer to keep up with but I know I am up to the task.
Out-of-class Help: In this class, there is only one form of 'homework': Write. Students may write about whatever topic they would like and however much they are able to write during the week. At any time the student can reach out to me to ask for writing prompts, picture prompts, music prompts, help with character development, dialogue, etc. (I can provide a week worth of prompts if the student would like.) I am also happy to help the students to come up with a writing schedule based on their personal schedules. Together we can come up with writing goals (including publishing) and work out a game plan on how they can obtain those goals. This is done through private messaging. I am always happy to read students' work and help them.
45 minutes per week in class, and an estimated 0 - 1 hours per week outside of class.
Jackson was an incredibly dark writer - Her work involves madness, surreal situations, and death. Please be advised that this is a very serious writing style.
