In this book club, students will have weekly reading assignments from the first Sherlock Holmes book, 'A Study in Scarlet' by Arthur Conan Doyle, and we will meet once a week to discuss the chapters. The last week, students will watch the BBC episode of 'Sherlock' based on this story, 'A Study in Pink' and we'll discuss the similarities and differences from the source material. My hope is that students will gain an appreciation for the historical crime drama/mystery genre, Sherlock Holmes as...
Students will improve their reading, discussion, and analysis skills. They will learn to think critically, voice thoughts, make predictions about the story, and analyze characters. They will gain discussion skills with peers like voicing their opinions and respecting others.
I've been teaching English online for over two years, and really enjoy helping others improve their reading, writing, and speaking skills. As a big fan of all the Sherlock stories, I think they are a great educational tool. The crime drama/mystery genre is a fun way to increase reading and analytical skills.
The homework is to read a section of the book before the next class, usually about 20 pages. It's important to read the selection before class so we don't have to worry about spoilers for some learners during discussion. If you need to miss a class discussion, please ensure they have read up to the correct page for the next discussion.
You will need a physical copy of 'A Study in Scarlet' or a digital version of the book. If you want to read it on a computer, I recommend 'The Complete Sherlock Holmes- Illustrated' on Amazon. The Kindle Edition is $3, and you can read it online with the Kindle Cloud Reader. You will need to watch BBC's Sherlock 'A Study in Pink' which is $5 on Google Play or you can watch for free on Dailymotion.
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
The student will be assessed on participation with a short note to parents after each class.
45 minutes per week in class, and an estimated 1 - 2 hours per week outside of class.
Please sign up only if the student is 13 years or older. The writing style is old fashioned so they need to be a fairly confident reader, and the BBC show has some mature themes and imagery. I encourage you to check on the student's reading progress to ensure they have read the selection before discussion time.
