Class Experience

In this ongoing club, no previous knowledge of photography is required, nor special cameras--just a love of photos and a desire to create stunning photos of your own! Students will be given the opportunity to showcase their own photos and receive constructive feedback from their peers. After our sharing time, a mini-lesson and challenge will be presented. Students with DSLR cameras may be able to explore topics more in-depth, but students without DSLR cameras will still be able to participate. Everyone may upload their photos for the challenge and discuss them in the classroom. Or, they may choose to share them in class the following week for live, constructive feedback. As we are an ongoing class, students may choose to showcase any photo they have taken, and do not have to stick to the previous week’s challenge.

Here is a list of topics that will be covered…
Lesson 1: Sharp Focus
Lesson 2: Cropping
Lesson 3: Rule of Thirds
Lesson 4: Backgrounds Tell a Story
Lesson 5: Filling the Frame vs. Negative Space
Lesson 6: Frame Within a Frame
Lesson 7: Leading Lines
Lesson 8: Perspective
Lesson 9: Natural Light vs. Artificial Light
Lesson 10: Food Photography

Learning Goals

Over time, students will learn a variety of skills that will enable them to improve their photography, from composition skills to understanding how a camera works.

Other Details

Parental Guidance
I ask that students only present non-controversial photos. All photos submitted should be deemed appropriate for people of all backgrounds.
Supply List
Any camera may be used for this course, but students with a DSLR camera will be able to explore the topic more in-depth as the club progresses and we dive into certain topics. During the first few weeks of the club, a point and shoot camera would suffice. If a student does not have access to a DSLR camera and it impacts their ability to participate in the challenge, a similar challenge will be assigned.
External Resources
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
Sources
I will be developing the curriculum for the club. There will be a mix of my own photography, as well as some found on Pixabay and Unsplash.

Teacher expertise and credentials
I have always been interested in photography, first as a hobbyist, then as a semi-professional. My husband and I ran a photography business for about 5 years, in which we photographed individuals, families, weddings, babies, and commercial photography. We still take lots of photos for family, friends, and ourselves.
