Class Experience

*You MUST purchase or check out these books for this class. We CANNOT read them in class due to copyright laws, we can only discuss and analyze them. I include links to very cheap copies as well as electronic copies below!*

In this 6-week course, we will discuss three books: The Diary of Anne Frank, A Long Walk to Water, and Inside Out and Back Again. This is a discussion class, where we will simply come together and discuss and share our ideas with one other.

Hopefully, we will learn to have passionate discussions about what we've read and make applications to real life.

If you're looking for a literary analysis class (examining text structure, plot, literary elements, etc.), check out some of my other listings. This class is solely for reading and lively discussion, so it is highly requested that your learner is interested in speaking and discussing with other students. I am here to facilitate discussion, but believe that students should talk more than me! I have book club discussion topics/questions, but I will allow the class to move at students' pace.

Week 1: Inside Out and Back Again
We will discuss part I and II.

Week 2: Inside Out and Back Again
We will discuss part III and part IV.

Week 3: The Diary of Anne Frank
We will discuss pages 1-140.

Week 4: The Diary of Anne Frank
We will discuss pages 140-end.

Week 5: A Long Walk to Water
We will discuss pages 1-64.

Week 6: A Long Walk to Water
We will discuss pages 64-end.

Students are expected to purchase these books and complete reading the required pages BEFORE the class session. We will not read these books together as a class due to copyright laws.

Parental Guidance
The topic of this class is focusing on how war shapes and changes young people. Please make sure your learner is comfortable with themes of war and violence, refugees, and racism. I am a trained and experienced teacher when handling these topics, and I have the certifications and professional developments needs to address these themes in a safe and inclusive environment. Inside Out and Back Again is a book about war and refugees; it also addresses racism the main character faced when coming to America. Due to the topics of this book, please make sure your learner is okay with sad themes. These are common middle school level books, and the content is appropriate. However, make sure your learner is not uncomfortable with these themes. I have taught these books for seven years in a middle school setting. I have been thoroughly trained in sensitivity and inclusivity through professional development (both school-mandated and voluntary). I address issues of racism and marginalized groups with kindness, inclusivity, and openness. I use culturally relevant and inclusive curriculum based on these inclusive text selections. Furthermore, everyone is given a chance to speak and they will be listened to from start to finish. I do my research on marginalized communities, offer support, and listen. I ask questions, listen to answers, and we discuss how we can improve our communities so injustices like these that occur in these books do not happen again.
