Shakespeare's Famous Tragedies A

Class
Jessie McKeon
Average rating:4.9Number of reviews:(55)
In this 10-week online course, students will learn about the writing, dramatization, & staging concepts in 3 of Shakespeare's famous tragedies. This class is set up to mimic a high school/upper grades elective course in English & Theatre.

Class experience

US Grade 9 - 12
This class is taught in English.
Students will learn basics of play analysis while studying plays, historical context of Elizabethan and Renaissance theatre, and self-paced, independent creative and responsive writing
I hold a BA in Performing and Visual Arts with a focus in Early British Drama and Shakespeare and have won several awards for my work in this field. I have spent over 20 years studying and producing the works of Shakespeare and his contemporaries.
In my classes we use video, guests, and unconventional tools to learn the topic together. I design all of my instruction around first creating a safe space, then doing what I call a "Sweep the Corners" review at the start of each session. At the completion of the course, we always Pack Up our learning and set off into our vast world!
Homework Offered
This class contains a lot of reading. While we will be doing some out loud in class, students are expected to read independently for 2-3 hours per week.
2 - 4 hours per week outside of class
Assessments Offered
Learners will be graded on response in-class and will have a final, comprehensive individual response worth 25% of their grade. This is a "pass/fail" class with written assessment except where a letter grade is requested for homeschool and supplemental school transcripts. I will do my best to accommodate the various needs that different educational entities require.
Grades Offered
I will provide an electronic copy of all plays in PDF format, obtained with permission from the Cornell University Library. If students choose to use additional resources or copies of the play, they should understand that they are still responsible for all content in these PDF files.
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
This class is for teens only - some of the material can be considered PG-13 due to the sense of humor and ignorance of medicine at the time these plays were written.
I will provide copies of all reading materials. I studied Early British Drama for 3 semesters in college as part of the focus of my major in Visual and Performing Arts, so my expertise is part of the source materials. The remainder of sources are readily available online and will be disseminated to students throughout the course when applicable. All presentations will be accompanied by bibliography, which will also be expected of students' papers and projects.
