Class experience

US Grade 5 - 8
I teach a successful Shakespeare Kids series on Outschool, which covers four plays from a theater appreciation viewpoint. I believe even younger students can be introduced to Shakespeare, especially those interested in theater arts! As someone who has always been interested in the Medieval, Renaissance and Elizabethan eras, I have designed and sewn my own costumes for Renaissance Faires, which I've attended all over the United States. I also teach musical theater classes locally as a dance instructor, and have performed in and directed student plays throughout my life. I love theater, Shakespeare, cooking, fine arts, writing and crafting; this class is a perfect combination of all of these things!

A complete, detailed supplies list is provided upon enrollment, but you can plan to use the following materials: Week 1: An orange, dried whole cloves, toothpick and ribbon. (Optional spices for extra fragrances: cinnamon, nutmeg and allspice and/or pumpkin pie spice mix) Week 2: Printable template, plus markers, colored pencils or paints. Week 3: Premade pound cake, ladyfingers or vanilla wafers (pound cake is yummiest, but if hard to find, you can use any type of soft vanilla/white flour cookie. You will also need vanilla pudding mix, milk, sweetened condensed milk and a variety of berries. Feel free to use gluten-free alternatives, or message me for ideas on substitutions. Week 4: A paper plate or prepackaged craft mask (available at most craft stores). For paper plate mask you will need a ribbon or elastic cord. Decorate with paint, gem or pearl stickers, feather and whatever else you have on hand! Week 5: 4-5 sheets of paper (5 will make 10 double-sided pages), a sheet of card stock, a thick needle and string, embroidery floss or yarn. If you own an awl, it is helpful, but you can also use a sharp tool, such as scissors or a pen. Week 6: Optional printout of script.
In addition to the Outschool classroom, this class uses:
Many of Shakespeare's plays contain a measure of violence, death, suicide, romance and magical characters. While we do not go into as much detail about any particular play, we will be discussing many of them, which may include these elements. During our session on the Black Plague there is discussion surrounding the details of the disease, including symptoms, death rates, statistics and modern-day cases of the virus. There will not be particularly graphic pictures but younger students and sensitive viewers may be squeamish, so I ask that you contact me before enrolling any learners under the recommended minimum age.
