Class Experience

The Journey:

The first class opens with an open question - why are we still reading and seeing Shakespeare? In the guided debate that follows, the group will explore the elements of his life and work that have helped it persist for the last 400 years, and examine the very real objections people have to the continuing dominance of it.

From there, we'll leap into action, learning the tools that actors have used for over 400 years to take them off the page and get them in front of an audience. Using these tools, we'll tackle Romeo and Juliet as if we are actors who want to put this play up and get people to spend money to see it. Ultimately, the class builds to a final presentation of a monologue of each student's choice, demonstrating their deep understanding of Shakespeare's text.

The class is designed to be fast-paced, interactive, and flexible. My role as teacher will be to facilitate dialogue and provide tools that each student can then use to turn text into performance. Learners of all styles and interests are welcome!

Other Details

Parental Guidance
Romeo and Juliet is a play that deals with two teenagers who fall in love, get married, and commit suicide. The play is also quite full of jokes that would warrant a PG-14 rating on TV. It's age-appropriate for a high school student, but it certainly has its share of sensitive content - I'm more than happy to have a more in-depth chat if there are concerns!
Supply List
Provided by the Teacher: Handouts with exercises throughout the class.

Student Materials: The only material students will need is a copy of Romeo and Juliet, which can be found for free at: https://www.folgerdigitaltexts.org/html/Rom.html

Now, the online version does not have the helpful annotations of the book version, which can be purchased here: https://www.simonandschuster.com/books/Romeo-and-Juliet/William-Shakespeare/Folger-Shakespeare-Library/9781451621709

However, the free online version is perfectly fine! In class discussions, we can clear up any pieces of the text that are difficult to understand without text notes.

Profile
Teacher expertise and credentials
I'm a professional actor and a lover of Shakespeare, with multiple years of experience acting and directing it for students and general audiences alike. I have a personal mission to teach Shakespeare in a way that acknowledges its true roots: not as dead literature, but as a blueprint for soul-reaching performances. My approach mirrors that: collaborative, practical, and passionate - it's the kind of class that you could not get from a non-theatre professional.
