Class Experience

US Grade 4 - 7
Intermediate Level
In this class, I will be introducing students to one of the greatest writers of all time - William Shakespeare.
We will be using the book A Stage Full of Shakespeare Stories: 12 Tales From the World's Most Famous Playwright by Angela McAllister. You will find a link to the book on Amazon under Sources in the class description. You could also borrow the book from the library.

Shakespeare is typically taught in high school, but his stories should be loved by learners of all ages! This book has adapted his plays into a narrative format that is easy to understand while still having all of the richness that his stories provide.

Each week we will discuss a different story. Students will need to read the story from the book prior to class. There will, on occasion, be a week where we will discuss two plays. We will be doing a variety of activities during our classes from hands-on art projects, line memorization from the actual plays, acting out the stories, and journaling using creative writing prompts. We will also look at actual lines from the plays that are not abridged and will discuss the figurative language techniques used by the poet.

Writing Portion:
Each week, students will have a short writing assignment that encourages them to use text evidence from the story to support a thesis. When the class begins, I will provide for students a video lesson on how to write a paragraph response using text evidence. They will be able to refer back to this at any point during the length of the class as a refresher. I will also be provided feedback to students, using the video message feature, multiple times during the length of the class.

Teacher expertise and credentials
My name is Jennifer Dodge, but my students call me Mrs. Jen. I am a certified early childhood teacher with a B.S in Early Childhood Education and a minor in music from Samford University. I have spent 12 years in the classroom teaching preschool, kindergarten, and language arts to first through seventh graders. For the past eleven years, I have had the awesome privilege of homeschooling my own three children who are now ages 22, 20, and 16. Currently, I teach kindergarten in a private school .

I am excited to help students learn to read and LOVE to read through hands on activities so that they will become lifelong learners! You will find that many of my classes are geared toward developing reading skills, novel studies, and hands-on book clubs, and book clubs that center around historical fiction so that we can take a deep dive into the historical aspect of the novel. I also love to teach preschool and kindergarten aged children, so I will also be providing classes that involve practice with fine and large motor skills, music and movement, and beginning reading, math, and science skills so that my students will be ready for school.

As a former homeschool mom, I also look forward to being able to provide classes that support other homeschool moms. If there is an area where their child needs extra enrichment or assistance, or if there is a subject that a mom just simply hates to teach, I would LOVE to partner with her in the homeschooling of her children.

I believe that learning to read and write NEVER has to be boring! I teach my classes with great enthusiasm so that my students will see my love for the subject. I hope this joy will come through the Zoom call and our classroom activities so that they will be excited to read and write as well. Reading and writing is a skill that every person will need throughout their lifetime. It is my goal as a teacher to make the learning of these skill enjoyable and exciting.

I look forward to having the opportunity to teach your child!
