SFX Camp: Fantasy Cosplay Makeup & Costume Design, Jr MUAs

Aspiring makeup artists (MUA's), theatre students, and cosplay enthusiasts will use makeup artistry and simple costume and prop design to bring their own characters to life.

Homework
Minimal homework. PLANNING & DESIGN Research their character and work on their facechart and/or vision board. SAFETY & MAINTENANCE Inventory their own products and tools to ensure they are maintaining them safely. Clean their makeup brushes and tools COSTUME & PROP DESIGN Complete or embellish their costume or props (if they were unable to complete it during class). PHOTOGRAPHY & VIDEOGRAPHY Continue researching character to explore elements to elevate their look. AFTER CAMP COMPLETION Keep practicing! Mastery is achieved through dedication to practice. Create as often as possible! We encourage students to join our GRWM classes or consider joining the Makeup Challenge Group to continue mastering their craft within the support of a community of artists!
Assessment
The last day of class serves as the assessment. Students will put everything they have learned together, will wear a costume to the final class if desired (please cover for protection during makeup application), then student MUAs and their Mentor MUA will apply their cosplay makeup together. Teacher will continue to guide students to ensure every student MUA is able to execute their look!

Class Experience

Welcome to MUA Co-op School of Makeup Artistry, where imagination takes center stage! We empower students to have fun, be themselves, love and respect themselves and others, be confident and outgoing, foster a spirit of community, and explore the breadth of their creativity through artistry. Above all else, we aim to teach students to be their most authentic and joyful self through the art of makeup. 

Fantasy Cosplay Camp teaches aspiring makeup artists, makeup enthusiasts, cosplay lovers, and theater students how to use their creativity and ingenuity to create character cosplays on a budget using makeup artistry and simple costume design. Designed for students of all skill levels, this camp empowers young creatives to explore the world of character cosplays using makeup artistry, costume design, and inventive props.

Each day of the camp offers a blend of instruction, demonstrations for hands-on practice, and a flood of creative flow. Student MUAs are encouraged to follow along with each demonstration. Our MUA Mentors observe closely and provide comprehensive support and feedback, ensuring that every student MUA is successful in executing their fantasy character cosplay.

Curriculum (Schedule by day)

Day 1: Planning and Design
Begin the cosplay journey by visualizing and planning your unique character.
Harness your creativity with the help of facecharts and vision boards.
Dive into discussions about popular anime, superhero/supervillain, and other cosplay or OC characters to spark inspiration.

Day 2: Safety and Maintenance
Prioritize safety and sanitization in cosplay and makeup.
Learn how to safely use and maintain makeup tools and products.
Learn how to perform skin swatches to test for allergic reactions.
Continue refining your face charts and vision boards.

Day 3: Costume Design 
Get hands-on with costume design using materials like cardboard and paper.
Elevate your cosplay using readily available materials.
Explore creative ideas for crafting props that complement your character's persona.
Discuss tips and tricks for designing and creating memorable costumes and props.

Day 4: Character Research for Prop and Set Elements
Dive into character research to deepen your connection with your chosen character.
Explore the character's backstory, personality, and iconic traits to identify options for prop and set elements to elevate the look. 
Explore popular lines/quotes and memorable actions to act out and incorporate into videos/photos.

Day 5: Brow Blocking, Bodypaint, Q&A, & Skin Prep
Learn about proper skin prep for any makeup look.
Master brow blocking, a necessary technique in many cosplay makeup looks.
We will discuss the differences between bodypaint options and demonstrate the technical application of each. 
Engage in a Q&A session with your experienced MUA Mentor to address your questions.
Receive preparation instructions for the grand finale!

Day 6: Theatrical Makeup Application and Cosplay Showcase
Take the stage and bring your character to life through makeup and costume.
Come to class in costume that is protected while we apply the character cosplay makeup/bodypaint together!
Showcase your incredible transformations and immerse yourself in the world of your chosen character.

Learning Goals
Students will learn:
SAFETY & MAINTENANCE
 How to properly use and maintain makeup products and tools.
PLANNING, DESIGN, & CHARACTER RESEARCH
 How to use a facechart and/or vision board to design their characters. Learn how to elevate their looks by using character research to explore the potential for the addition of dynamic elements. 
MAKEUP & BODYPAINT
 Professional makeup and bodypaint application including preparation, safety, and proper removal.
COSTUME, PROP, AND SET DESIGN
 How to make costume pieces, props, and/or set background elements out of repurposed or recycled materials, makeup, paper, or other easily accessible & affordable materials.
COMPLETE CHARACTER COSPLAY
 On the last day of class students will put together everything they have learned to bring their character to life!

Other Details

Parental Guidance
Parental supervision is recommended. While this camp is not intended for SFX makeup looks specifically, SFX looks including blood/gore effects are generally permissible. Please be aware that some students may find SFX makeup effects disturbing. Students may be required to use scissors, liquid latex, fake blood, prosthetics, spirit gum. Parental supervision is advised. Please be aware of possible allergic reactions. Please be aware that makeup artists often utilize their neck and chest as a canvas for bodypaint. Students and teachers may wear a sleeveless shirt.
Supply List
Teacher will provide a detailed list of products and tools they will be using. We have provided a detailed supply list which includes professional and budget friendly options. However, teachers emphasize ingenuity and improvisation. There are ways to achieve a look with substitutions and students may ask about suitable household or drugstore substitutions. Additionally, students receive a printable facechart and vision board. 

Students will need a quiet, organized, well lit workspace with a mirror.

PLEASE NOTE: The costume & prop design supply list includes a large array of examples of items and tools that are useful for DIY costumes and props. Not ALL of these are required. The Mentor MUA will go over some common uses for these items and will provide suggestions for Student MUAs creative vision.
