Class Experience

In this course we will cover the basics every future sewer needs to know about their sewing machine. All machine brands differ slightly, and some differ a lot, but they all have basic similarities which will be covered, and should get your sewer on the road to sewing their first craft!

We will talk about the way we thread a machine, both the bobbin and top thread, we'll talk about how to reverse your stitches, change thread tension, and some of the tools every sewer needs to be successful, and how to use them. This will also cover basic sewing machine safety.
By the end of class sewers will be able to piece 2 pieces of fabric together, and have a general working knowledge of their sewing machine. This is not a sewing class teaching them to sew projects, but a class teaching them how to use the basics of their machine, so they can begin sewing.

This is also an individual or private class, so students can have a one-on-one, individualized lesson. Due to the nature of this class, the time will run between 50 minutes to 2 hours depending on the difficulty of the machine, and if I have another class scheduled either 30 minutes or 60 minutes after your class. If the class prices difficult, I will schedule a makeup meeting time at no extra charge. However, due to the possibility of a 2 hour class, the price of the class reflects that possibility.

***Please see the Parent Section for information regarding Student-No-Shows and cancellations

Parental Guidance
Younger students may need help with some of the tool handling as they some are sharp. This includes keeping their hands a safe distance from the sewing needle. ***Cancellations and Student No Shows: If your student does not make it to class, I am still there for the assigned hour because I don't know if you aren't coming, or just running late (On that note, this class cannot be done in 30 minutes, so a few minutes late we can usually swing getting everything completed, but not much more than 8-10 minutes), so payment in full is still expected. I have 6 children, and I am taking time away from them to be with your student. If your student is not there, I am still unable to take time with my children, and so an hour is lost to me. If you can't be there, please withdraw your student, or at least contact me prior to class, and I will withdraw them. If you want a make-up class for the one missed, you will need to go back to sign up for another class. I do not make transfers. I apologize for the inconvenience. Communication BEFORE class is key. If you let me know before class starts your student will not be there, they will be withdrawn, and you will not pay for the class. Thank you for your understanding. I love teaching and helping young ladies (and gentlemen!) learn to use their machine to become future sewers, but I also would rather spend time with my children than sit waiting for an hour for a student who is unable to attend, and has not communicated that with me.

Teacher expertise and credentials
I am a certified elementary and middle school teacher. All the academic subjects are important to me. I especially love math, and helping students who struggle with math find ways to make it more understandable. I also have a love for reading and English grammar. I enjoy helping students become better readers by finding great books they love, and going deeper with them, journaling, writing about them, drawing, extending the stories to use their own creativity, and making crafts if possible. Though I also really love science, there is also a special place in my heart for social studies because it is often the most overlooked of all the subjects, and yet we can learn so much from it! I also enjoy the outdoors, organic gardening with my honey bees, harvesting seeds from my vegetables and flowers, training my dogs, baking homemade desserts and breads, making art and jewelry, and quilting (all of which are classes I am excited to teach your family), and spending time with my 6 kids (ranging from 2 years to 17 years). I've also spent the last year teaching online English classes. I am excited to share my experiences, making difficult concepts simple, and sharing things I love that make life special and unique with you and your family.
