Sewing a Bag for Your American Girl Doll

Using your own sewing machine and basic sewing skills, we are going to complete a reversible Japanese Knot Bag, the perfect size for your 18 inch doll. I will walk through each step and be available for extra support.

Class Experience

Beginner - Intermediate Level
Join us in this fun and creative sewing class, where you'll learn how to make a beautiful and functional reversible Japanese knot bag! This stylish bag is perfect for an 18 inch doll to carry their essentials. The unique knot design and reversible feature allow for versatile use, offering two looks in one!  Pattern included!

In this class, students will:

Learn the Basics of Sewing: Limited sewing experience? No problem! We'll cover essential sewing skills, including reading a pattern and sewing straight stitches.

Explore Fabric Selection: Discover the joy of choosing complementary fabrics that will look great together, giving your bag a unique and personalized touch.

Master the Knot Design: The Japanese knot bag is known for its simple yet elegant knot closure. I will guide you step-by-step through the process of creating this feature.

Create a Reversible Bag: Enjoy the flexibility of a reversible design, allowing you to switch up your look effortlessly. Choose fabrics that showcase different colors or patterns for each side!

Class Structure:
Week 1: Preparation of fabric
Week 2: Sewing the long strap
Week 3: Sewing the short strap and the bag
Week 4: Final touches and showcasing your finished bag!

The videos will contain the information necessary to give students a good understanding of each topic and each one will include a task for the students to undertake during the week to complete their project. 

After watching each video and completing tasks, students will be provided with feedback and specific next steps on how to improve or adapt. 

Time frame for the Week:

Monday: The video for the week will be posted. Students can submit questions.
Tuesday and Wednesday: I can answer any questions pertaining to the task of the week.  
Friday:  Students should have tasks completed and uploaded in the classroom for feedback and discussion. Students will discuss it among themselves.  The teacher will provide feedback to the class and individual students.

Materials Needed:

2 Fat Quarters of Cotton Fabric (two coordinating pieces for the reversible design)
Sewing machine
Iron and Ironing Board
Thread
Scissors
Pins or clips
Sewing Needle
Pattern (Included)

This class is perfect for beginners and intermediate sewists alike, ages 9 and up. Whether you're new to sewing or looking to expand your skills, you'll enjoy the process of creating this stylish accessory.

By the end of the class, you'll have a beautifully crafted reversible Japanese knot bag and the confidence to take on more sewing projects in the future. Plus, you'll have a unique handmade item to show off or gift to someone special!

Lesson 1:
Fabric selection and preparation
 Picking your fabric pattern and type of fabric.  Choosing matching thread.  Washing, ironing, and cutting your fabric.

Lesson 2:
Sewing the long strap
 Sewing the fabric together to make the long strap and turning it right side out. 
22 mins of video lessons
Lesson 3:
Sewing the short strap and the body
 Sewing the short straps together and completing the reversible body of the bag.

Lesson 4:
Finishing Touches
 Hand sewing the short handle and closing the turn around opening.

Other Details

Parental Guidance
Use of sewing machine, scissors, pins and iron. Parental guidance is recommended when students are using these objects to complete their project.
Pre-Requisites
Students should already know basic sewing skills. Students should know how to use their machine without direct instruction. If students have completed 1-2 basic projects they should have the skills for this class.
