Sewing 200: Make a T-Shirt and Skirt

Class

Average rating:4.9Number of reviews:(530)
In this 4 week flex course, students will learn how to make 2 pieces of clothing suited perfectly to their own measurements.

Class experience

Students will learn about the importance of seams when sewing
Students will learn how to sew stretchy fabrics
Students will learn how to customize their creations
I have been sewing for 21 years and teaching it for about 5 years. I think it's really important that sewers be able to think in a way that allows them to make their own clothes exactly the way they want them to be. I have also found that adults tend to be terrified of sewing knits, so I like to teach kids young that sewing with knits is nothing to be afraid of if they're properly prepared for it!
This is my general sewing kit guide for my 101 class: http://a.co/cMPINnT

Specifically, students will need:
A sewing machine
Ball point sewing machine needle (usually sold in yellow package)
Scissors only for fabric (no paper!!!!)
Pins
Chalk or white pencil or white crayon (if fabric is white, use blue or yellow. Regular craft chalk is totally fine)
A t-shirt that the student likes the fit of
1 yard of jersey knit fabric per project (so 2 yards total)
I particularly like to use "Doodles Interlock Knit Fabric" for first time knit sewers. It is sold at Jo-Ann Fabrics: https://www.joann.com/fabric/?q=doodle&prefn1=prod_type&prefn2=productcategory&srule=Test-V2-Search-Rule&prefv1=Product&prefv2=Knits&addShipToHomeConditions=false
If you have any questions about materials, please do not hesitate to ask!
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
A sewing machine is a power tool. Some pre-teen and young teen students are mature enough to use a sewing machine on their own, others are not. Please sit with your child while they sew at least until you see that they can use it comfortably, and always keep their eyes on the fabric while the needle is in motion.
