Class Experience

Students will learn how to thread their sewing machine.
Students will learn how to use a sewing machine.
Students will learn how to back stitch, pivot, and hand stitch.
Students will learn how to insert elastic into a casing.
Students will learn how to make a dart.
I have been teaching sewing to students one on one and in groups for over 5 years, and I've been sewing for 21 years! I love teaching sewing because of the confidence it brings to students, plus it lays the foundation for future design and STEM skills.
Just sew!
I have created an Amazon List of materials to purchase. Please note that you may be able to get these materials cheaper at a local store such as JoAnn Fabrics, Michaels, or other local sewing/craft store. Feel free to purchase the entire Amazon list or just use it as a guide. For each individual project, you will need; Bag: 1/4-1/2 yard of cotton or cotton-blend fabric, ribbon Skirt: 1 yard of cotton or cotton-blend fabric, elastic Stuffed animal: 1/2 yard of cotton or cotton-blend fabric, safety eyes, stuffing, pattern (Simplicity 2613) **I am not able to provide a .pdf of this pattern you will need to purchase it** For all projects you will need straight pins, and scissors that are only used for sewing. Paper dulls the blade of scissors so they don't cut fabric well.
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
No live meetings, and an estimated 1 - 2 hours per week outside of class.
A sewing machine is a power tool. Some pre-teen and young teen students are mature enough to use a sewing machine on their own, others are not. Please sit with your child while they sew at least until you see that they can use it comfortably, and always keep their eyes on the fabric while the needle is in motion.
