This absolute beginner will learn machine usage and several foundational techniques and ends with them making a customized, keepsake tote, for their supplies, with all of their baby steps displayed right on it!
From age 12-55 I've been sewing and have sewed everything from my own clothes, to all of my bridesmaids dresses, to upholstering furniture and making custom costumes. I'll be focused on coaching your learner during this course, that's if I can see them working.

A detailed master supply list with photos in a PDF file will be attached to the learner's welcome email here on the Outschool student portal. Learners need a basic sewing machine and its accessories (button hole maker foot, zipper foot etc.) to complete this course. They must have access to their machine manual or they will be terribly frustrated with this entire course. I have many parents ask me for machine suggestions. Here's my opinion for what it's worth. I definitely wouldn't purchase one of the tiny ones that only does a straight stitch even though yes you can sew on them, since my class is crash a course about machine sewing and I promise that your learner will love sewing by the time they finish my course! I always suggest that you purchase a name brand machine (like Brother or Singer) just in case your learner doesn't enjoy sewing and you can always offload a name brand easier. Ask around, you may be able to borrow one too for this course. Parents may need to help your learner, with several different things, during this course. There is a lot to this course so you’ll just have to be mindful of what your learner can and cannot handle, such as ironing and operating the machine. Parents, I've also built this course for you to use to be able to assess how well your learner is able to function independently and emotionally through a large course and project. This course will be available for 3 months after the ending date. I know life gets in the way sometimes so just know that that's fine so have your learner go at their own pace until they finish. I'm always happy to see bags after the end date!
Nothing more rewarding, as an educator, than to see faces light up with joy after accomplishing something they thought was much too difficult to accomplish! Sometimes, a learner needs to be gently nudged beyond what they think they can do. Tears...
