Class Experience

This absolute beginner, machine sewing course teaches machine usage, several foundational techniques and ends with them making a customized, keepsake tote, for their supplies, with all of their baby steps displayed right on it!

I will send the detailed homework list in a PDF file so that it can be easily printed. I'm well organized and each step is well thought out so if your students follow the homework and supply list each day they shouldn't get behind at all.

Supply List Overview
(Please see the PDF attached to your learners inbox welcome letter upon enrollment for the full list with photos)

1. Basic sewing machine and its accessories (button hole maker foot, zipper foot etc.)

***I have many parents ask me for machine suggestions. I definitely wouldn't purchase one of the tiny ones that only does a straight stitch even though yes you can sew on them.
I always suggest that you purchase a name brand machine just in case your learner doesn't enjoy sewing and you can always offload a name brand easier. Ask around, you may be able to borrow one too for this course.

Learners need a basic sewing machine that has these features to be able to complete this course.
zigzag foot
buttonhole foot
straight and zig zag stiches
preferably several decorative stitches.
a manual (digital or printed)

Overview of some of the other supplies:

Good sharp fabric scissors/shears
Small embroidery scissors
Machine needles for light and medium weight cotton
Plastic or metal bobbins that fit your type of machine
1 yard each: three types of cotton fabric: One solid color and two either contrasting, solid or patterned all in in similar weights
3 yard- Non woven, medium weight, fusible interfacing
42” of canvas strap (for handles)
Thread that contrasts your solid color but matches your fabrics
(2) 6 inch zippers (contrasting color to the solid color)
Sewing needles for hand sewing
Several buttons to match or contrast with your fabric. Any size will do.
Printer to print out practice sheets, the pattern onto 8x11 paper
Binder or folder for papers
Dressmaker's measuring tape
Dressmaker’s chalk
5 inch slider gauge
Dressmaker pins (nice long and sharp ones)
Seam ripper
Iron and ironing board
Scotch tape or clear packing tape
Masking tape or painters tape (any size will do)
Yard stick
Small trash can for threads and scraps

Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
7 hours 30 minutes per week in class, and an estimated 1 - 2 hours per week outside of class.
Adult helpers, you may or may not need to assist your learner, with many different things, during this course but try not to do it during the live class time. Outschool’s policy is that only learners are supposed to be on camera, talking and asking questions of the teacher.

There is a lot of work to this course, so you’ll just have to be mindful of what your learner can and cannot handle doing independently, such as using the iron, reading handouts, measuring etc.

Please, also make sure that your learner has a sewing manual available for their particular machine since I've not suggested only one type of machine for this course and they will need to refer to it. Reading the manual tends to be one of the most dreaded and difficult for many learners but this is crucial for their success to operate their machine. I do suggest that you look through it with them ahead of time.

Allow them to do as much as they possibly can but do help between classes to keep them on track.

Just know that learners that are not able to do the prep work, will slow down the live class some. So please help them be mindful of others and the live class time as I will continue to move the class forward for those that are completing all of the work.

This same course is available as a Flexible schedule course and may be much more appropriate for those learners that want to take more time to absorb all of this content slowly and not feel the rush of this faster paced 5 class crash course. Although this isn't a competition and learners can finish after the 5 day class, still some learners may need a slower pace to feel more confident.

It's perfectly alright if they finish after the live course since they will have access to all videos even after the class. I provide non live videos so that they do not have to wade through the live format.
