Description

Class Experience

Students will improve their sewing skills by sewing curved and irregular shapes. Focus will be put on making small, even stitches to increase stitch strength and allow for the items to be stuffed. We will also learn about using pins effectively and safely to provide stability while sewing. Effects that can be created by layering felt and using cutouts will be explored and customizations in color, decoration, level of detail, and finishing techniques will be encouraged to make each student’s piece unique. Finally, we will learn about the use of appliqué as a decorative method of sewing.
I have a Bachelor of Arts in Theatre Arts with a focus on costuming and performance and a Master’s of Library and Information Science. I have over 30 years of experience in sewing and embroidery and have taught hand sewing and machine sewing in both one on one and group settings.
No homework will be assigned but students may wish to finish their felt creation outside of class depending on complexity of the project and how detailed the student chooses to make it.
The printed pattern - this will be provided every week as a printable download before the scheduled class Felt in a variety of colors Pins and a pin cushion - ball head pins are preferred as they are easier to grasp Scissors capable of cutting felt Another pair of small sharp pointed scissors for cutting detail work - I find these to be perfect https://amzn.to/3kPZL9p Needle - should be made of metal and sharp enough to go through felt fabric Needle threader - this is optional but may help students thread their needle more easily. These are frequently found around the house in travel sewing kits and look like a metal coin with a wire loop sticking out of one end. A spool of thread in a coordinating or contrasting color Glue - either tacky glue or white glue for adding detail elements students would rather not sew Fine tipped marker for drawing on details or tracing patterns Ribbon, magnet, or clip depending on what the student would like to turn their creations into.
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
55 minutes per week in class, and an estimated 0 - 1 hours per week outside of class.
Sharp objects such as a sewing needle and scissors will be used during this class. Parents should remain nearby to supervise and assist if necessary.
