A sewing pattern can be confusing - there are columns of multiple types of measurements, lists of fabrics, and words like “notions” (and that’s just the envelope)! In this one time lecture style class we will talk about what it all means and how to use patterns effectively. We will discuss how to find your measurements for clothing patterns and determine which size pattern you will need. Once you know how to find your size, we will explore fabric types, some general sewing pattern vocabulary, figuring out how much fabric you will need, and the basics of reading a pattern. Questions and discussion are encouraged and attendees are welcome to bring a sewing pattern to class to refer to. This is an introductory class and we will not look at advanced topics such as how to alter or hack a pattern.
Learning Goals
Students will learn how to understand the fundamental parts of a pattern such as sizing, fabric types and amounts, and the most common terms and symbols found on commercial sewing patterns.
