In this course, students will learn about seven structures considered the Seven Wonders of the Medival World. We have numerous lists suggesting these" Wonders": Ancient, Modern, New, even Natural World. This course looks at the seven locations that were culturally important to the medieval world and developments in the cultures that built them. Through lecture and discussion, we learn about each, when they were built and why they are important then and now. The time of the Middle Ages (roughly 900 - 1400) really does not fit in either ancient or modern history and rightly deserves its own section. This class focuses on what was happening in these "dark ages" by looking at the historic buildings which span from before and after this time frame. The list includes: Catacombs in Alexandria Colosseum Great Wall of China Hagia Sophia Leaning Tower of Pisa Porcelain Tower of Nanjing and Stonehenge Students will learn and discuss these locations and why they are important. We will see reconstructions and learn theories about why they were created. Many of these places still stand today and have survived a long history. But why are they so important to the medieval era? Together we'll find out.
