Class Experience

Do you wonder about events in history? How did they happen? Why did they occur? Could they have been avoided? What mysteries have yet to be solved about these events? Join me in this fun 8 week exploration all about shocking events that have happened all around the world. It will surely be an adventure you don't want to miss! Pack your bags and get ready for an epic trip through time!

In this 8 week course, we will meet weekly to discuss a different historical event. We will work chronologically through time and cover many exciting topics (all listed below in the weekly breakdown).

Class is structured to include live teacher instruction, peer and class discussions, brainstorming, Q&A and activities that we participate in creating as a class. This class will be engaging and informative, while also allowing students to actively share thoughts and opinions. The goal is to inform each student of events in history, but also allow them to contribute with their prior knowledge excitement for the topics we are covering.

My teaching style allows students to use logic and reasoning in order to come to their own conclusions. It also promotes the importance of learning facts and building upon those facts to relate history to modern times.

During class time, there will be periods of lecture, in order to inform and gain interest form students, followed by individual and peer activities, whether it be a game, trivia or visual/image related activity. Students do not need to have any prior knowledge of the content. We will learn and explore as much as we can on each topic, weekly and I'm always available to answer questions outside of class or assist with additional learning opportunities. I want to pique students interest in history and this class is a great starting point for this!

I can't wait to meet your student

Week 1: The Black Death (1347)
Week 2: The Lost Colony of Roanoke (1587)
Week 3: The Great Chicago Fire (1871)
Week 4: The Sinking of the Titanic (1912)
Week 5: The Great Depression (1929)
Week 6: The Attack on Pearl Harbor (1941)

* Possible topics that may replace classes, based on student interest and class flow:
The Donner Party
The Hindenburg Disaster

Learning Goals

Students will gain knowledge about famous historical events as they happened through time. Students will be able to discuss historical facts, myths and mysteries surrounding each event and have an understanding of when, how and why they occurred.

Other Details

Supply List
I would love for each student to have access to a notebook, pencil and colored pencils (or crayons). During the lecture part of the class, students will be encouraged to use "note booking" to illustrate and create visuals about the topic being discussed. This is a fun way of note taking and allows the student to make the information "their own!"
External Resources
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.

Teacher expertise and credentials
Hello & welcome to Outschool! My name is Suzi and I'm excited to share a bit about myself.

I am a former elementary school teacher turned homeschooling mom. I have a background in Literacy education and find joy in teaching new things and helping students discover their interests through content and instruction. I think it's important to engage students through storytelling, example and hands on experiences.

As a teacher, I've taught everything from pre-school through high school grades and across all content areas. My favorite subjects to teach are history and math and I have a serious love of language and how to use it, whether it be through writing, speaking or problem solving.

My family and I live in Wisconsin. We have 3 children and 3 dogs and are originally from the East Coast...but are starting to realize we're destined to be midwesterners! My oldest is in her first year at The United States Military Academy at West Point, my middle is a junior in high school and my youngest is a freshman. I hope to see you in class soon!

Please feel free to reach out with any questions or suggestions you might have for classes. I love teaching with Outschool and can't wait to meet your student.

Thank you,
Miss Suzi
