Class Experience

US Grade 1 - 3
Sentences are the building blocks for all other writing.
In my paragraph classes, I see students that need help developing strategies for writing sentences that express a complete thought.

This class is for beginning sentence writers as well as emerging writers who want to learn how to improve their sentence writing and make it more interesting.

Each week will include a review of the parts of a sentence (subject/verb), capitalization, and punctuation and focus on particular part of speech within our sentences (see weekly topic schedule below).

After review, I will show a picture from which to build a sentence.
We will discuss what details could be added to the sentence to make it more interesting using the focus for the week (see below).
Students will be encouraged (but not required) to share their completed sentence(s).

A sample class might look like this:
Adjective review - show picture of dog on screen
We discuss details -- what color? size? what is the dog doing?
Students will be encouraged to add details to their sentences:
     *I see a dog.
*I see a brown and black dog.
*I see a brown and black dog playing with a ball.
Then, another picture: a tree.
    *I see a tree.
*There are red apples on the tree.

Writers will check their final sentences for CUPS:
Capitalization
Understanding
Punctuation
Spelling.

Students should bring paper and pencil OR a dry erase board with markers for class each week.
