Sensory Writing with Harry Potter
What's included
1 live meeting
50 mins in-class hoursClass Experience
The class will begin with introductions between the teacher and all learners (5 minutes). A brief lecture on sensory details in writing will be covered, with example sentences and phrases of each type (taste, sight, smell, touch, and sound) (5 minutes). Students will then complete an exercise to help them prepare for their writing. This exercise will consist of brainstorming of sensory phrases related to the room they are currently occupying ("the leather sofa felt cool and smooth," "the kitchen smelled of fresh cookies," "the quick chirping of birds floated through the window"). This will be discussed as a group so learners can bounce creative ideas off of each other (10 minutes). With the remaining half hour, students will write a descriptive short story using as many sensory details as possible. The topic of the story will be The Magic Wand, and will require students to imagine themselves picking out a wand of their own. Students will have time to share parts of their stories, if they so choose.

Teacher expertise and credentials
Hello, families and students! My name is Laura McGuire and I love to teach AND learn! I am currently taking a break from teaching in the public school setting to stay home with my two young sons. I have a Masters in Education in Library Media Education, and I am certified by the state of Oklahoma to teach PK-12 Library Media, 5-12 English, 5-12 US History/Government/Economics, 5-12 Career Tech Business, 5-12 Business Education, and 5-8 Social Studies. Prior to being a school librarian, I taught middle school English for two years.
I believe that education is not a one-size-fits-all system, and as educators we must tailor the lesson to reach every single child. I place a high emphasis on building rapport with each student, as students won't care to learn if they don't believe their instructor cares. I also strive to reach maximum creativity with each class- teaching in new ways that hopefully will be exciting and fun. My main goal of online teaching is for your students to leave the class feeling happy, excited, and a bit more knowledgeable about the subject matter, and to be an approachable and helpful teacher.
My classes are tailored to different age ranges, but most will relate to themes of English, literature, and library education. I am a self-proclaimed "nerd" and love all things Harry Potter, Star Wars, and Lord of the Rings, so don't be surprised to see classes like "Literary Themes in Star Wars" or "Harry Potter Food Truck." Classes will also be offered on evaluating news articles and Facebook posts, literary elements with a twist, and how to create a research project. I believe the most effective learning happens when you're having fun, and I will strive to create that atmosphere in each and every class.
A little bit more about me: I live in Oklahoma with my husband and two kids. We love to be outdoors and to read books. I have been a fan of Harry Potter for twenty years, and each year for Christmas, my sister-in-law gives me a new Harry Potter related gift. It's always my favorite one! My favorite vacation was to Europe in 2014, my favorite cookie is chocolate chip, and my favorite team is the Kansas City Chiefs. Thanks for stopping by, and I hope to be able to meet you soon!
