Description

Class Experience

In this course we will seek to understand how our brain, nervous, and sensory systems work together so we can learn, grow, and create memories. This course is based on the Next Generation Science Standard (NGSS) MS-LS1-8:
Gather and synthesize information that sensory receptors respond to stimuli by sending messages to the brain for immediate behavior or storage as memories.
The unit questions we will strive to answer are:  "How does the brain process information from the environment?" and "How can my understanding of the sensory processing system help me be a successful learner?"
For the past 16 years, I have taught middle school (12-14 year old students) science as a credentialed teacher in California. The subject matters I've taught have included Earth, Life, and Physical Science, as well as STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics).
Each week, students will be asked to independently read an article regarding the sensory system we are studying that week. In week 4, students will be asked to complete the unit project along with their reading.
1 large cup (you may want extras- for experimentation) Plastic wrap Rice (just a few grains) Rubber bands (several- various sizes) Scissors Metal Spoon Triangular Prism (a simple, plastic one will do) Flashlight Magnifying Glass (a simple, plastic one will do)
In addition to the Outschool classroom, this class uses:
Weekly check-for-understanding questions are available upon request. Students and families requesting these weekly questions will also be provided with written feedback and a rubric-based score. Please contact me prior to the start of the class if you would like to receive this optional assessment piece.
All students will receive informal, written feedback on their final project.
2 hours 30 minutes per week in class, and an estimated 1 - 2 hours per week outside of class.
During this course, we will be discussing the inner working of several body systems, including the eye, ear, and brain. The presentation and reading articles include artist renditions (clipart) of these organs. We will also discuss learning styles (visual, auditory, and kinesthetic). Students will engage in activities and discussion in which they reflect on their own learning style. During our weekly phenomenon activities, students will be using scissors, rubber bands, prisms, and magnifying glasses. These items should be used with caution and guardian permission. During week 4, we will use Padlet (www.padlet.com) to share our unit projects, if students feel comfortable.
