Sensory Stories with KittyKat for Students with Learning Disabilities
Class experience
Chit Chat and Storytime with Kitty Kat is a fun interactive lesson for students who are non verbal or who are developing their communication skills using communication aids to support their understanding. I have 15 years experience teaching in Special Educational Needs and have worked with sudents who use digital and print based communication aids like PECs, Grid3, Proloquo2go, Widget, Objects of Reference and Makaton. Whatever the student's communication needs are I will adapt my classes...
Students will learn to greet and engage with each other. They will develop their communication with an increasing shared vocabulary of Makaton signs and symbols. They will develop confidence sharing the things that they like and develop their listening and interaction skills during the sensory story.
Here is a list of objects which I will use to tell the story and it will be useful to have them to support the student to engage with the story. If you do not have some of these objects do not worry they are not essential. Week 1: a feather, a bowl of water, some honey, some money, a toy boat, a magnifying glass or binoculars and a guitar. Week 2: a feather, a bowl of water, some honey, some money, a toy boat, a magnifying glass or binoculars, a guitar and some leaves. Week 3: a feather, a magnifying glass or binoculars, some leaves and a ring, flour, eggs, butter, the student's favourite cake flavouring, a bowl, kitchen scales, a wooden spoon, a cake tin. We will mix a cake together that can be baked after the lesson. Please make sure the student has washed their hands before the lesson. Week 4: a feather, hot chocolate, fairy lights, a ring, a piece of cake, a magnifying glass or binoculars and a guitar.
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
