This creative writing class will focus on using descriptive language to engage the senses, particularly in poetry, but as an effective style of writing for any form. Each day, we will begin by reading and enjoying age appropriate selections of writing together that will serve as examples of effective engagement of the senses. We will look closely at how each writer chooses words carefully so that the reader can really "sense" the writer's emotions. After reading these examples, we will work...
Each day students will be asked to complete a short piece of poetry using their senses, to be shared in class the next day.
Students will need access to a variety of objects that engage each of the five senses. A small collection of items from around the house is perfectly acceptable. Ideally, they should have 2-3 items for each sense (2 things that have strong smells, 2 things that make sounds, 2 things that have an interesting texture, etc.)
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
4 hours 35 minutes per week in class, and an estimated 1 - 2 hours per week outside of class.
