This class is designed for students who have a beginning knowledge of reading piano music. During this course young musicians will expand their knowledge of reading music with a relaxed approach, develop their knowledge of playing melodies and harmonies. Students will work on their sight reading skills. Students will need to purchase a piano book for this class. Each week students will learn and review music terms and symbols that will help them become more fluent with reading music. As a group, students will work on melodies and harmony. Students will be encouraged to also choose a song to work on during the week and play for the teacher and class. Weekly topics will include, but not limited to the following: Learning notes, pitches Learning beginning harmony Music symbols (accidentals, dynamics and more) Composers/Composition/Improvisation Finger positions Beginning Music Theory Example of tentative schedule *at anytime the schedule may need to change: Week 1 9/5 Identify the C Position and perform music in this position Week 2 9/12 Discuss intervals and learn a song with the interval of a second Week 3 9/19 Week 3 Learn a song using the interval of a third Week 4 9/26 Theory-based lesson focused on intervals Week 5 10/3 Lesson focused on rhythm- count, clap, and play. Week 6 10/10 Learn a song using the interval of a fourth Week 7 10/17 Theory-based lesson playing rhythms and intervals Week 8 10/24 Naming and playing notes Week 9 10/31 A song in a minor key Week 10 11/7 Learn a song using the intervals using a fifth
