Celebration Day-We Finished the Book
We've done a lot of hard work, so let's celebrate our achievements!
Students in this class will be regularly engaged in solo and ensemble playing, beginning music theory concepts such as tonic, dominant, major, minor, and scales, and will have continual exposure to improvisation, solfege, and creativity at the keyboard.
Other goals include:
-healthy piano technique
-developing ability to 'audiate', or hear music in one's head
-set and achieve one's own musical goals
-Basic Music Reading and Writing
-coordination of both hands while playing melodies and accompaniments
-practical and hands-on music theory understanding along the way
Homework Offered
Daily and weekly homework will consist of short practice assignments supported by videos that I will upload in the classroom. Students may need help from adults accessing and remembering to use those videos depending on their age/comfort with the technology. Usually only one song will be assigned per week, although sometimes there will be additional technical exercises or music theory concepts to practice. In general, learners should expect to spend 10-20 minutes a day practicing, and set aside 4-5 days of practicing a week. Learners who have trouble keeping up are encouraged to reach out to me for private sessions and help, as I will gladly offer transfers or other support in helping learners be successful.
0 - 1 hours per week outside of class
Assessments Offered
Students are encouraged to unmute and play for myself and one another. Learners may also record themselves playing directly in Nearpod or on the Outschool platform for feedback from me. All feedback will be positive and focused on the continued growth and enjoyment of the learner. Learners will have one on one opportunities with me during class time as well as group study where they will have the opportunity to give and receive help from peers. Once learners pass their mastery check for a song, they will be empowered to self-pace in learning the next song.
Grades Offered
Learners must have completed Book 1. I offer it as a live, self-paced course as well, so even if you have completed another Primer level class, you may work as quickly as you want to through Book 1 then join in this class.
-Students need Music Moves for Piano, Book 2 (green cover, available at MusicMovesforPiano.com, $20)
-A piano or keyboard of an appropriate size (if purchasing a keyboard for this class, look for something with at least 60 touch sensitive or weighted keys)
-A piano bench or seat that is the appropriate height at the keyboard. Your learner's elbows should be level with or slightly higher than the keyboard.
-If learners wish to write their own music, they may download Musescore for free or print out their own blank sheet music.
In addition to the Outschool classroom, this class uses:
Students may need help accessing practice videos in the classroom, as well as at-home support to practice regularly. Each week, we will start with light stretching and rhythmic movements such as clapping, jumping, or stepping. Please ensure the proper audio settings in Zoom have been selected and enabled prior to starting class. Learners should have "Use Original Sound" enabled in audio settings and selected once class begins every week.
We will also use these outside resources for class:
-Kahoot! for variety in music reading practice and review
-Slides from Canva and Google Slides for music reading practice
-Nearpod and Edpuzzle for interactive videos
-MuseScore teacher demonstrations of writing music and learning about the different parts of a score
