This multi-day class is for the aspiring flutist (ages 7-12) at any level. Because we will be meeting one-on-one, the exact curriculum will depend on the student's skills and interests. However, we will be covering these main essentials throughout our time together: Technique Tone Sight-reading Vibrato Scales & arpeggios Basic music theory concepts (key, time signature, rhythms, dynamics, accents) Standard flute repertoire During our lessons, I will assess the student's playing and provide them with real-time feedback. In each lesson you can expect: -A warm-up, which might include scales, arpeggios or tone studies, -An etude study or other technique building exercise, -Selected repertoire pieces - I focus on the details of playing each piece. Depending on the student's skill level, I might focus on note reading, tempo, tone quality, vibrato, or phrasing, -Feedback and assignments for the following lesson. Each student's success with the flute will depend quite a bit on their practice time outside of our lessons. Consistent, quality practice time is the key to learning any new instrument, so I expect all of my students to practice on their own according to their skill level. (Students with less experience should only practice for a max of 15 minutes a day, while more advanced students should aim for 45 mins. to an hour of practice daily). I will gladly offer suggestions and methods of practicing so that the student knows where to start and how to tackle their weekly homework assignments. Usually, I will ask the student to track their practice sessions in a notebook, noting the date and length of time that they spend practicing. While I personally have a classical background in the flute, I also have experience teaching pop music and I'm more than happy to teach my students their favorite pop, rock and/or musical theater songs. I believe that students learn best when they're having fun so I like to build their flute skills through contemporary music too! Punctuality policy: If the student doesn't arrive within 10 minutes of the class start time (unless you've sent me a message beforehand explaining they will be late), I will end the meeting and you will be charged the lesson fee. In order to avoid missed lessons, please send me a message beforehand and I'll do my best to schedule a make up time with you! **Please note: This class is for students aged 7-12
Learning Goals
Students will be able to produce a lovely tone using correct embouchure, apply techniques such as articulation and vibrato to their playing, practice sight-reading skills, and demonstrate their knowledge of music theory by playing scales, identifying keys and writing in music notation.

Supply List
Students will need their own flute and cleaning supplies but if you are just starting out and want some advice on buying the right one, please send me a message! After our first lesson together, we will decide which method book would fit the student's needs best. I find that learning from a physical book works best, so students will be expected to bring theirs to the lessons.
External Resources
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
Sources
I like to use "Essential Elements for Band," "Standard of Excellence" and Trevor Wye's flute book series, but the exact curriculum will depend on the student's skill level.
Teacher expertise and credentials
I have been playing the flute for 17 years and teaching for about one year. I have performed as a soloist, in local symphonic bands, wind ensembles, and orchestra. I have my Bachelor's degree in Music Education from NYU and I've taught in elementary and high school general music classrooms in New York City public schools.
