Class experience
This class is designed to promote critical reading, thinking, vocabulary, and writing for middle-grade students (5th-8th grades). Younger students with reading levels at least at the 6th-grade level are permitted. There is a short essay assigned after each book. All books are read outside of class. Classtime is spent discussing the chapters, completing activities, and playing games. Students should be expected to be able to read 40-50 pages per week. During class, there are vocabulary...
This class covers 6th-7th standards in comprehension, analysis, figurative language, grammar, writing, listening, and speaking. Through high-interest texts and discussions, students will be challenged to think critically, write effectively, and question what they read in order to analyze the relationship between, text, author, self, and society.
I am a certified teacher at a public school. I have a BS in English Education with minors in special education, secondary education, and elementary education. I am currently pursuing my MAE (which focuses on diversity in the modern school). I have traveled extensively and worked at several schools, all of which put a high emphasis on diversity in education. I've received certificates in Crisis Prevention Training, Title IX, and have worked in women's shelters working with women and families dealing with domestic abuse, homelessness, and substance abuse. I am qualified to teach sensitive subjects in a professional and educational manner.
See classroom page for weekly schedule and printouts.
In addition to the Outschool classroom, this class uses:
Please check the texts to make sure that they are appropriate for your learner. Books taught are viewed by commonsense media to be appropriate for ages 10 and up. Some mild humor may be used. In "I Am Malala," the story describes a young girl who was shot by the Taliban but survives. Details are not graphic. Please go to www.commonsensemedia.com to determine if the stories are appropriate for your child. These texts may contain mild violence or sad situations, but do not include vulgar language, profanity, gore, or any that would be problematic for this age group. Students' conversations will be kept at an appropriate level for their age group and students will be redirected if their topics bridge any subjects that might be sensitive or problematic. I have taught these books and the themes in the classroom setting and have training on how to educationally approach these topics. Students are to keep a respectful tone and be accepting of differences in opinions. Students that cannot be respectful to classmates will be sent to the waiting room.
