Class Experience

US Grade 3 - 4
Join me for a fascinating semester of Language Arts! Semester One will include 3 Unit Studies.

Students will be expected to do reading and writing on their own for homework. We will incorporate grammar, vocabulary, and spelling throughout the semester as well.

Students will learn through a variety of lectures, games, assignments, projects, and student presentations.

Sample Scheudle:

Weeks 1-4: We will start off with Fairy Tales and Fables. Students will read classics together in class and be asked to share their favorite if we do not cover it together. Students will then be guided through writing their own Fairy Tales and Fables. Students will set up a notebook for spelling and vocabular. Students will complete a variety of vocabulary and spelling activities independently. Students will be assessed at the end of the unit through a game and quiz.

Weeks 5-7: Poetry
Students will continue to work in their spelling and vocabulary notebooks as we learn 12 styles of poetry! Students will be given a demonstration on how to fold a book to keep their poems in, but free to make their own style or use something they already have.

Weeks 9-16: Author Study- Roald Dahl
Students will create interactive notebooks that go along with each novel we read by Roald Dahl (list will be provided upon enrollment). The interactive notebook will include spelling and vocabulary for the novels we read as well as many fun activities.

Each novel will be assessed through conversation in class. Comprehension questions will be provided for each novel and fit into the interactive notebooks. There will be many opportunities for students to work together as well as independently. If your student prefers to work soon, please let me know upon enrollment so I can keep a note.

We will do a variety of projects including drawing, building, writing/book reports, cooking, crafts, food art, etc. Please don’t feel like you have to go buy materials for any of the projects unless you want to. There will be plenty of ways to make each thing!

Be sure to join for Semester 2! Nonfiction and Fiction

Holidays: I have tried to account for traditional holiday schedules. If your student needs time off for other holidays/reasons during the semester please let me know and I will work with you to make up any days missed.

Teacher expertise and credentials
Hi! My name is Kathy and I live in Southern California. I love working with students all around the World and of all different ages. I mainly teach classes that are Language Arts based (reading, writing, spelling, and grammar). I also teach about Historical figures, especially if I can tie them into Literature. I also love teaching about animals, and doing story time for the younger kids.

I have been teaching for over 15 years. I have taught in traditional school settings, charter schools, home schooled my own children, and taught online. I have a BA in English as well as a K-12 Teaching Credential. I am very passionate about helping people learn to love reading and writing. I also love to help people that need a little extra help with spelling and grammar. It makes me so proud and happy to have a student tell me how much they think they are improving or to get answers correct on something they missed before.

My approach to teaching is interactive and hands on. I want my students to learn while having fun. I ask a lot of comprehension questions, group work, pair work, and projects (depending on the class). I try to do as much of the work in class as possible so that kids can still be kids once they are done.

My background is in English but I love History and Science too (especially the experiments). It wouldn't be unusual in one of my classes to have to make something that just pops into my mind because it seems fun. I love animals, chocolate, and all things Disney!
