Self-Study Writing Masterclass for Middle School Students

Class Experience

Students will learn to write informatively, creatively, and argumentatively. 

Students will learn to create a thesis, conduct research, and support their thesis in writing.

Students will gain independence in their learning through a self-led final project.
I am a licensed K-12 intervention specialist with my Master's Degree in Education and Special Education. I spent three years working in the public school setting and providing interventions in writing, reading, math, and life skills. I taught 7th grade writing for two years in an inclusion setting.
Students will be expected to complete regular homework, including:
- Watching video mini-lessons when they are posted (approx. 5-10 minutes each)
- Completing writing assignments (approx. 1-2 hours)

Due to the nature of this flex class, time put in will vary by student. I do my best to keep lessons short and direct, and limit assignments to what is necessary for understanding.
Students will need something to write with - I prefer Google Drive/Google Docs for easy sharing and editing, but Microsoft Word works, as well.
In addition to the Outschool classroom, this class uses:
Students will receive written feedback along with a letter grade on all assignments they turn in, and assignments will be graded according to a rubric. 

*This class is meant to help students develop academic independence. Students must take ownership of their learning by turning in all assignments they'd like feedback on.
No live meetings, and an estimated 1 - 2 hours per week outside of class.
Students are expected to complete work on time and submit it. I do accept late submissions (within reason) and always provide thorough and constructive feedback on assignments that are turned in. If a student does not hand in their assignments, I will not be able to provide feedback. 

I suggest that students use Google Docs/Google Drive for assignments, as it makes it easy for collaboration, feedback, and live support if students request that during office hours. This is not a requirement and students are encouraged to use whatever writing software/tools they are most comfortable with.
