Self-Paced Recorder for Beginners: Level One Music Class

In this 8-video flexible course, students will learn the basics of playing recorder. They will joyfully learn the notes of the treble clef staff, basic rhythms, three notes on recorder, and seven different songs.

Homework
1 hour per week. Students will also be given age-appropriate short assignments after each class. Students will be sent worksheets, songs, and games. Students will be encouraged to practice their recorder.

Class Experience

US Grade 2 - 5
Beginner Level
This beginning recorder class is a joy-filled, interactive class. It will be taught in a flexible format. Two 25-35 minute videos will be sent to students for four weeks (8 videos total), and students will interact with the teacher and other students by submitting videos of their playing, completing worksheets and sharing their work in classroom, and playing interactive games through Google Slides. 

In this music class, students will begin learning the foundations of playing recorder. They will explore these concepts:
-Beginning Rhythms (quarter notes, eighth notes, and quarter rest)
-Musical Alphabet
-Reading and Identifying Music in the Treble Clef Staff
-Proper Recorder Technique (how to blow into instrument, how to hold the instrument, how to cover the holes)
-Three Beginning Notes on Recorder (B A G)
-Seven Songs

Here is a weekly breakdown of class topics:
Lessons 1 and 2: 
-Students will be taught proper recorder technique
-Students will be introduced to the notes B, A, and G
-Students will be introduced to the treble clef staff
-Students will be introduced to quarter notes, eighth notes, and rests
-Students will add sound effects to the song Chicka-Hanka and learn motives from the song Shanghai Chicken

Lessons 3 and 4:
-Students will practice the notes B, A, and G
-Students will practice the musical alphabet
-Students will practice identifying notes in the treble clef staff
-Students will practice drawing their own treble clef signs
-Students will practice reading, identifying, writing, and creating with quarter notes, eighth notes, and quarter rests
-Students will create their own patterns for Shanghai Chicken, learn the song Hot Cross Buns, and learn the song Rain is Falling Down

Lessons 5 and 6:
-Students will continue their work with B, A , and G on recorder
-Students will identify B, A, and G in the staff along with the rest of the musical alphabet
-Students will continue working on their recorder technique
-Students will identify the form of their recorder songs
-Students will practice the rhythms quarter notes, eighth notes, and quarter rests
-Students will create their own melodies to given rhythms
-Students will practice the song Rain is Falling Down and learn the song Frog in the Meadow

Lessons 7 and 8:
-Students will complete their work with the notes B, A, and G on recorder
-Students will practice reading and performing with the rhythms quarter note, eighth notes, and quarter rest
-Students will practice the musical alphabet by adding words to the treble clef staff
-Students will write and perform their own recorder compositions
-Students will learn the song Closet Key and the song Hop Old Squirrel 

Each week, students will be sent two interactive videos. Students can watch and interact with the lessons included. Together, we will sing and play different songs, read rhythms and notes in the music staff, play games, and create music. 

Students will also be given age-appropriate short assignments after each class. Students will be sent worksheets, songs, and games. Students will be encouraged to practice their recorder. 

Children who attend this class do not need any prior experience in music. I will help lead them in playing their instrument!

Syllabus

over 4 Weeks
Lesson 1:
Recorder Technique, Note (B), Music Staff
 Students will be introduced to proper recorder technique, the note B, and the treble clef music staff. Students will add sound effects to the song Chicka-Hanka and begin to learn motives of Shanghai Chicken. 
Lesson 2:
Review Technique, Notes (B A G), Music Staff, Quarter Notes/Eighth Notes
 Students will review proper recorder technique, the note B, and the treble clef music staff. Students will learn the notes A and G. Students will add sound effects to the song Chicka-Hanka and begin to play motives of Shanghai Chicken. Students will play additional B A G patterns and learn quarter notes, eighth notes, and quarter rest. 
Lesson 3:
Practice Notes (B A G), Musical Alphabet, Quarter Note/Eighth Notes/Rest
 Students will practice the notes B A G on recorder. They will practice motives from Shanghai Chicken and improvise new patterns. Students will review the treble clef staff and practice the musical alphabet. Students will work on the song Hot Cross Buns and read the song with rhythm syllables. 
Lesson 4:
Identify Rhythms, Read a New Song, Write/Read in the Music Staff
 Students will practice the notes B A G on recorder. They will also aurally and visually identify the rhythms quarter note, eighth notes, and quarter rest. They will read and perform the song Rain is Falling Down. Students will review the treble clef staff and practice drawing a treble clef. 

Other Details

Parental Guidance
We will be playing an instrument during class. Children should be in an environment that allows for noise making.
Supply List
A recorder is needed for class. Yamaha brand and Music is Elementary brand are recommended.

Students will need to complete several worksheets throughout class. They will need to have access to a printer.
External Resources
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
