Assessment
A self assessment will be posted at the end of class. A narrative evaluation is available if requested within one week of our final class section. This evaluation will be based on the self assessment and the learner's participation in class activities.

Class Experience

US Grade 3 - 7
Beginner Level
This self paced class is for all learners and  includes supports for learners with learning differences who need low reading level high interest books to develop reading fluency and comprehension.  In "Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Old School"  by Jeff Kinney join Greg Heffley for some "technology free" misadventures.  Learners will read about 50 pages of this accessible graphic novel per unit.  

Students will respond to what they read using creative projects and class discussion to support writing development and comprehension.  Throughout the class students have the opportunity to share their own experiences and critically analyze the text.

Learner will also practice executive function skills by creating a business plan, using a time block planner to make a plan for spending 24 hours without technology, and making a packing list.

***Be sure to let me know if you need additional time to complete the course.  I can extend the teacher comment period.

Learners will read and analyze "Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Old School" and also practice their writing skills and executive function skills by participating in a number of fun and practical activity challenges.

Syllabus

4 Lessons
over 4 Weeks
Lesson 1:
Old School = Tech Free
 Greg's Mom decides that the entire community should go "tech free".  Learners practice their executive function skills by creating a concrete time block plan for living without technology for 24 hours. 
Lesson 2:
Adventures in Business and Volunteering
 As Greg endures his technology break, he decides to start a business.  Will it be successful? Learners have the opportunity to develop a simple business plan. 
Lesson 3:
Welcome to Hardscrabble Farms!
 Greg's family has a tradition of enduring the world's most challenging sleep away camp experience.  Learners will create a packing list of things that would make Greg's camp life easier. 
Lesson 4:
Will Greg Survive His Stay?
 Greg and his friends are challenged to practice their survival skills.  Learners are challenged to master and demonstrate a survival skill.

Learning Needs
This class is designed to support students with dyslexia, dysgraphia, and other learning disabilities with a fun low reading level book. Students can use graphic organizers, create videos, or draw to respond to class posts and videos.
Parental Guidance
I may provide Google Docs that learners can make a copy of and edit for their own use. Learners can review using Kahoot! All these are COPA compliant third party resources that do not require an account to use.
